He tried three times and did not pass the Ecole des Beaux-Arts entrance exam.After his sister died, he joined a Catholic order. Father Eymard encouraged him to pursue sculpture and drawing.Rodin had to defend himself for the Age of Bronze and St John the Baptist sculptures. His work was so realistic, critics felt he made a cast from a live model.He had a relationship with Camille Claudel, a student, assistant, and model for many of his sculptures. Their stormy relationship ended in 1898.Rodin stopped doing public commissions after critics disliked his Victor Hugo and Balzac sculptures.Rodin finally married his lifelong companion Rose Beuret in 1917, the year they both died.NOTABLE WORKS:The Kiss, The Thinker, The Age of Bronze.
